Trick or Treat Your Smile to Better Dental Hygiene

At Mist Dental, we believe prevention is one of the most important parts of looking after your smile. That’s why, from October, we’re pleased to be introducing professional dental hygiene appointments at our practice, giving patients another way to maintain their oral health and keep their smile feeling fresh.

Our new hygiene appointments are £80 for 30 minutes, giving you dedicated time with our hygienist for professional cleaning and personalised oral hygiene advice.

Why Is Dental Hygiene So Important?

Good dental hygiene is about much more than having teeth that look and feel clean. Healthy gums are an essential part of a healthy mouth and looking after them can help prevent problems from developing in the future.

Plaque is a layer of bacteria that constantly builds up on the teeth and around the gum line. If it isn't removed effectively, it can irritate the gums and contribute to gum disease. Over time, untreated gum problems can affect the health and stability of the teeth, which is why prevention and early care are so important.

Regular hygiene appointments provide an opportunity to professionally clean the teeth and gums, while also identifying areas that may need a little more attention. This preventative approach can help keep your mouth healthy and may reduce the likelihood of needing more complex treatment in the future.

One of the most valuable parts of a hygiene appointment is understanding how to look after your mouth between visits.

Your hygienist can talk through your current routine, demonstrate effective brushing techniques and recommend suitable ways to clean between your teeth. They can also offer practical advice around diet and lifestyle, helping you make small changes that support your oral health every day.

Everyone's mouth is different, so there isn't necessarily a one-size-fits-all approach to dental hygiene. Our aim is to make your appointment useful and personal, giving you the knowledge and confidence to look after your teeth and gums at home.

If you'd like to give your oral health some extra attention, contact us to book your hygiene appointment.

What Happens During a Hygiene Appointment?

Our new 30-minute hygiene appointments are designed to give you dedicated time to focus on your oral health.

Your hygienist can professionally clean your teeth, helping to remove plaque and tartar that regular brushing may not reach. They can also provide personalised advice on looking after your teeth and gums at home, including brushing techniques and cleaning between your teeth.

Everyone's mouth is different, so the advice you receive is tailored to you. Whether you're already confident with your oral hygiene routine or would like some extra guidance, a hygiene appointment can help you understand what your mouth needs.

If it's been a while since you've had a professional clean, now is a great time to book your first hygiene appointment at Mist Dental.

Hygiene and Your Home Care Routine

A professional hygiene appointment works alongside — rather than replacing — your everyday oral hygiene routine.

Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between your teeth and making sensible choices around sugary foods and drinks all remain important. Cleaning between the teeth is particularly important because a toothbrush cannot reach every surface. The Oral Health Foundation explains that interdental brushes, floss and other interdental aids can help remove plaque from these harder-to-reach areas.

Your hygienist can help you understand whether there are areas you're missing and suggest practical ways to improve your routine.

For families, these habits are particularly important. Children learn from the routines they see at home, so encouraging good oral hygiene from an early age can help establish habits that last throughout life.

At Mist Dental, we're proud to provide NHS dental care for children, helping families in Harrogate access preventative dental care from an early age. If you're looking to register your child with our friendly dental team, we'd be delighted to welcome your family.

Don't Let Halloween Scare Your Smile

Halloween is one of those times of year when sweets, chocolate and sugary treats are hard to avoid, especially for children. And while we're certainly not here to take the fun out of Halloween, it's worth giving a little thought to how you enjoy those treats.

It's the frequency of sugar exposure that matters for teeth. Having sugary foods and drinks regularly throughout the day gives bacteria in the mouth more opportunities to produce acids that can damage tooth enamel and contribute to tooth decay. The NHS's advice on looking after your teeth and gums recommends reducing the amount of sugar in your diet and keeping sugary treats to mealtimes where possible.

So, let the children enjoy their Halloween haul, but try to keep treats as part of a meal rather than something they dip into throughout the day. Drinking water afterwards is also a simple way to look after their teeth.

And once the costumes are packed away and the last Halloween treats have been enjoyed, getting back to normal brushing, healthy eating and regular dental routines is the best way to keep those smiles healthy.
