Even the smallest damage or staining to your teeth can cause you to be self-conscious but there is a treatment that is affordable and can take care of chips, fractures, or gaps, and improve discolouration of the teeth. Composite bonding is a dental treatment where composite resin, the material used for ‘white fillings’, is applied to the surface of the tooth. Composite resin comes in a variety of shades and can be colour matched to your teeth to give a natural and aesthetically pleasing result.

The composite resin is applied to the surface of the damaged tooth and then moulded to restore the original appearance. The procedure is used to correct worn out enamel, uneven alignment of the teeth, chips, dis-colouration, spacing or cracks.

Composite bonding is an ideal solution for those wishing to restore teeth quickly, treatment is straightforward and typically does not require multiple visits to the practice. Firstly, your dentist will match the colour of the resin to your natural teeth to ensure a natural looking finish. Essentially the treatment involves your dentist bonding this composite over the top of your existing teeth, so there’s no damage to existing enamel. They will then work to sculpt and shape this resin to match the rest of your teeth to provide a more even appearance. This treatment is pain free and is popular with anxious patients for this reason.

A coating of bonding fluid is applied to hold the resin in place, once moulded the finished tooth will replicate your own teeth. The composite is then polished giving your teeth a natural appearance to fit in with your other teeth. Immediately after treatment you should avoid foods and drinks such as tea and coffee to avoid staining.

Composite resin is durable and can be treated as you would your own teeth. Regular visits to your dentist and hygienist will keep your restored teeth in tip-top shape.

What are the benefits of composite bonding?
One of the most significant benefits of composite bonding in comparison to other treatments is that it’s a quick and effective way to rectify minor faults on teeth.

Will I feel the composite resin?
The bonding will have little to no changes in how your mouth feels following treatment. Wherever the resin has been applied it will be moulded to be an exact replica of the tooth before it was damaged.

Are there any foods to avoid following treatment?
We do advise patients to be careful with biting down on hard foods with the composite tooth/teeth. You can eat most foods, however you should be mindful of the amount of pressure you apply. Your dentist will discuss how to care for your newly repaired teeth.

How long does composite bonding last?

On average composite bonding lasts for 5 years. Whilst durable, the material is not as hard as your natural teeth. It can wear down, chip or stain over time. Great oral healthcare and regular visits to your dentist and hygienist will help to prolong the life of your bonding.

How do you clean teeth with composite bonding?

As with your own teeth brush them twice a day and floss. A hygienist appointment is also recommended every 6 months for a professional clean and examination.
